Your question: E-book, CDs, DVDs, etc.?
It's my prejudice that Fred wouldn't do as well as an e-book.  Novels might be fun to read on an electric book sitting under a tree in the summer sunshine, but the "reader configuration" for the study of mathematics is at a table, with pencil & paper, and being able physically flip back easily to previous chapters.

I have several books on my computer that I have (legally) downloaded from the Internet.  I have started to read some of them on the nice large screen of my computer, but it just isn't the same as reading a real book.

Books have been "going out of style" for the last several hundred years.  And Guttenberg is still giggling when he hears about the demise of the physical book.
